Well-crafted bio content comes in handy when you’re publishing to all the different social media platforms. Each one will ask you to develop your profile. You can copy and paste your professional bio from one place to the next. Vary the wording, shorten or add content, as needed.
Bio Writing: Best Practices
- If you’ve got a story worth telling, don’t hold back
- Don’t go on for too long in your bio – save the details for your memoir or another purpose
- Decide if you’d like to write from the first-person (me, I) or third-person perspective (He, she, they) and then stick to that format
- 600 words is sufficient for a professional bio
- A career summary will suffice
What Makes a Professional Bio Compelling?
- Your story resonates with the reader.
- Your bio is written clearly and simply.
- Your expertise is evident based on the facts shared.
- Your bio expresses a clear passion for your career or business, and purpose.
- You personal brand, and what you stand for and believe in, comes across.
- Your bio clearly shows the reader how you can help him or her.
TIP: Try to place the most important, or reader-focused information first when writing your professional bio. This way, if you need to cut some text to fit a space or character count, you can chop from the bottom and the most exciting parts will still be there.
Adjust the Tone of Your Bio to Suit the Medium
- Your LinkeIn bio might read a bit more formally than a bio that you share on the About page of your website.
- If you serve different niches, play up whichever niche you’re currently writing to in a particular bio (like a bio written for a women’s magazine, for example)
Bio Writing Formula
Here’s the simplest way to create your professional bio:
- Work on the “story” that brought you to where you are in business today.
- Write up some highlights of your career history.
- Explain why you do what you do.
- List out your strengths, talents and skills.
- Explain what you do for clients or customers, and how you do it.
